Riber Castle is situated on a hill 850 feet above sea level and overlooks Matlock Bath. It was designed and built by John Smedley in 1862.
The castle has recently undergone a total refurbishment and conversion to luxury residential apartments.
Pyro Fire had the pleasure of providing fire engineered solutions for issues encountered during the development by writing a comprehensive fire safety strategy.
Completed in 2008, Jennens Road provides residential and ancillary accommodation over 12 levels.
Problem: Travel distance and fire performance issues.
Solution: Reduced fire performance from 120 to 90 minutes, residential travel distances were extended with the provision of detection.
A new visitor attraction to tell the exciting story of ‘The King in the Car Park’. Following the extraordinary discovery of King Richard III in a Leicester car park, Maber’s team of architects, interior designers and heritage specialists delivered a major new visitors centre, telling the story of the Dynasty, Death and Discovery of King Richard III.
Our involvement was the production of a fire safety strategy for the building to assist with building control approval due to a number of issues arising during the design stage. Using value-engineering techniques, we were able to see the project through building control approval while making some enhancements to the design in addition to some cost saving benefits.
Housing & Care 21 have opened a number of brand new Extra Care facilities throughout the UK. Thanks to our input with the fire safety strategies for the schemes, we were also asked to fire risk assess the sites. We found it important to ensure the building had been constructed and fitted out to a sufficient standard in terms of fire, keeping in mind the significance of the on-going occupancy.
Completed in 2015, Derby Innovation Centre was designed as a futuristic innovation with a mix of office accommodation and individual units for technological development and research and as such required different fire safety measures in terms of their separation, escape and fire resistance requirements.
In order to encourage interaction, there is an internal hub with large open areas incorporating a double void light well. Due to the sloping roof, it was not possible to create sufficient natural ventilation nor create a smoke reservoir to protect the escape routes from the upper levels. Rather than introducing additional mechanical ventilation, we helped provide an alternative solution to protect the escape routes from the upper levels.
Completed in 2005, Fremlin Walk is a medium rise shopping centre built over a multi-storey car park
Problem: Restricted design guidance for the building use.
Solution: Pragmatic approach taken using a different design criteria. This is just an example of how our specialism can overcome even the most difficult of challenges.
Completed in 2008, Hull Oncology & Haematology Centre is a UK Centre of Excellence for the treatment and care of patients.
Problem: Inappropriate alarm and detection management controls.
Solution: A management strategy was integrated with the fire strategy which ensured that a more efficient evacuation method could be utilised.
Completed in 1990, our senior fire safety engineer performed analytical studies on the home of England Rugby, Twickenham Stadium.
Problem: Issues with fire protection to structural steel work and means of escape.
Solution: Analytical studies demonstrate much of the steel work could be left unprotected and to ensure adequate means of escape.
Completed in 2007, Talbot Street is a prestigious development consisted of seven storeys of new build residential accommodation and leisure facilities.
Problems: Extended travel distances within the common areas
